Press Statement

Calon Films can confirm that production on its debut feature film, Iniquity, has been temporarily paused following the default of a key investor on their agreed financial commitments.

This development is a direct result of the investor experiencing cash-flow difficulties and does not, in any way, reflect a lack of confidence in the project itself. Iniquity continues to enjoy overwhelming support from its remaining investors, Professor Sir Christopher Evans OBE and Brian Jones MBE. As well as from prominent figures across both Houses of Parliament, the Welsh Senedd, and a number of high-profile public figures.

Calon Films is currently seeking legal advice and is actively working to establish a clear pathway forward. This includes ensuring that the investor in question is held accountable to their contractual obligations, while safeguarding the future of the production.

Iniquity is far more than a feature film. It is a cultural and historical movement. One that brings to life the powerful true story of Welsh working-class martyr Dic Penderyn and the events of the Merthyr Uprising in 1831. The project stands as a tribute to a defining moment in Welsh history and aims to resonate far beyond the screen.

Alongside the film, Calon Films is leading a petition to the Monarch seeking a Royal Prerogative of Mercy (posthumous pardon) for Richard Lewis (Penderyn). This initiative reflects the project’s broader mission: not only to tell history but to help shape its legacy.

The company is also committed to meaningful social impact. Calon Films is offering employment opportunities to individuals affected by the recent job losses at Tata Steel Port Talbot and maintains close ties with the community steering committee “Calon Y Fro,” the group behind the preservation and repurposing of St Mary’s Church in Aberafan. Together, these efforts underscore that Iniquity is not simply a film, but an opportunity to celebrate Welsh heritage, support communities, and potentially bring about historic recognition and change.

Regular updates will be posted via our social media channels.

We would like to thank you all for your continued support and understanding during this extremely challenging period.
